A September 13, 2008, gala celebrating Montgomery High’s first 50 years – and building for its future download PDF Contacts: Sally Connell, sallyconnell@comcast.net, 573-7109 Chris Smith, 523-4509, csmith54@sonic.net Montgomery High turns 50 this year, an occasion that alumni, parents and other Viking faithful will mark in grand fashion with The Big Monty, a gala the evening of Saturday, Sept. 13. Musical headliner of the celebration will be Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, creators of one of the most original sounds in American pop-folk music. Hicks was a member of Montgomery’s first graduating class, the Class of 1959. Other luminaries among Montgomery’s half-century of graduates also will appear on stage, among them comic Steve Bruner, Marilyn Kentz of “The Mommies” and broadcaster Cammy Blackstone. The celebration also will feature lavish food, an auction and decade zones where Montgomery alumni can re-connect with other grads from the 1960s, ‘70s, 80s, 90’s and the 21st Century. A high point promises to be the christening of a re-creation of the school’s long-beloved Viking Ship. The Big Monty will happen within the transformed Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Returning alumni also will be greeted on the night before the gala at a home football game. Proceeds from The Big Monty will benefit the Montgomery Education Foundation, which enhances the environment of learning at the school by making cash grants to teachers and programs across the campus. Along with sponsoring The Big Monty, the non-profit Foundation is working to create a $1 million endowment fund to assure Montgomery of a perpetual source of essential funding.
